Restrictions on Firing Employees in Hawaii
Employers in Hawaii are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.
Hawaii laws make it unlawful for an employer to:
- require an employee to take a polygraph test
- fire an employee who refuses to work in unsafe conditions
- fail to allow employees time off to vote
- fail to allow employees to respond to a summons or to be a witness
- fail to pay employees for serving on jury duty
- fire for union activity
- deny equal employment opportunity
- violate protections for reservists or veterans
- retaliate against an employee for filing a safety complaint, reporting a violation of law, or filing a wage claim
- fire an employee for having wages garnished
- fire an employee for using family leave
