Meal and Break Rules in Illinois

Employers in Illinois must comply with these state rules relating to meals and break times.

Employees in Illinois who work seven and one-half continuous hours must have at least 20 minutes for a meal period no later than five hours after the start of a work period.

The requirement does not apply to employees whose meal periods are established through collective bargaining.

Employers in Illinois must provide employees with 24 hour consecutive hours of rest per calendar week, in addition to the regular rest period that follows the end of each workday.

Exceptions exist and special rules apply to certain industries and child labor.
