Iowa Rules for Employing Minors

Employers in Iowa must conform with these state rules relating to the employment of minors.

In Iowa, work permits are required in order to employ a minor who is 14 or 15 years old. A work permit will be issued by the superintendent of school or an authorized person upon the application of the parent, guardian or custodian of the minor desiring the permit.

The person authorized to issue work permits may not issue a permit unless he or she has received, examined, approved and filed:

• a written agreement from the person, firm or corporation into whose service the minor under 16 is about to enter, promising to employ the minor, describing the industry and the work to be performed; and
• evidence of age showing the minor is 14 years of age or older.
