Meal and Break Rules in Maine
Employers in Maine must comply with these state rules relating to meals and break times.
Employees in Maine may not work longer than six consecutive hours without taking at least 30 consecutive minutes of rest time that may be used as a mealtime.
This requirement does not apply:
- if there is a collective bargaining agreement or other written employer/employee agreement providing otherwise
- in cases of dire emergency
- in cases of small businesses with less than three employees
- in jobs that allow employees frequent breaks during the workday
