New Jersey Minimum Wage Law

Employers in New Jersey must conform with these state rules regarding the minimum wage paid to employees.

Effective January 1, 2014, the minimum wage rate in New Jersey is $8.25 per hour.

New Jersey's minimum wage law applies to employees except for the following:

• outside salespersons
• persons selling motor vehicles
• part-time employees primarily engaged in the care and tending of children in the home of the employer
• minors under 18 (except that minors under 18 in the first processing of farm products, hotels, motels and restaurants that are covered by wage order rates and vocational school graduates with special permits under the Child Labor Law are covered by the statutory rate).

In addition, summer camps, conferences and retreats operated by any nonprofit or religious corporation or association are exempt from minimum wage and overtime rates during the months of June, July, August and September.

Employees engaged on a piece-rate basis to labor on a farm must be paid for each day worked not less than the minimum hourly wage rate multiplied by the total number of hours worked.
