Rhode Island Rules for Employing Minors

Employers in Rhode Island must conform with these state rules relating to the employment of minors.

In Rhode Island, the school committee of each town, or a person the school committee designates, may issue for any child who is at least 14 years of age a permit to work.

The permit allows the employment of the minor on days when school is not in session, and on school days at hours when schools are not in session.

The permit does not authorize employment of minors in factories or in mechanical or manufacturing establishments.
