Workplace Smoking Rules in Washington

Employers in Washington must comply with these state rules regulating smoking in the workplace.

In Washington smoking is prohibited in public places and places of employment, with certain exceptions.

Employers covered: Employers with one or more employees.

Written policy requirements: Employer policy not specified.

Posting requirements: Signs either prohibiting or permitting smoking must be conspicuously posted. The boundary between a nonsmoking area and a smoking permitted area must be clearly designated.

No smoking areas: Smoking is prohibited in public places and in places of employment. A place of employment is defined as any area under the control of a public or private employer which employees are required to pass through during the course of employment, including entrances and exits to the places of employment.
