Restrictions on Firing Employees in Wisconsin
Employers in Wisconsin are subject to these state rules that restrict firing employees under certain circumstances.
Wisconsin laws make it unlawful for an employer to:
- fire employees who testify in minimum wage proceedings
- interfere with employees' political activities
- not permit time off to vote
- require employees to take a polygraph test
- fire employees because of jury service
- fire for union activity
- deny equal employment opportunity
- retaliate against an employee for filing a workers' compensation claim, testifying in a wage proceeding, or opposing unfair employment practices
- fire employees for exercising rights to access personnel files or to take family leave
- violate protections for veterans or reservists
- fire employees for having wages withheld for child support or other garnishment
